Tesla’s Autopilot Training Prioritizes Musk’s Driving Data, VIP Drivers at the Forefront

According to the latest insider’s info, the self-driving software solely relies on Elon Musk and some VIP influencers. These VIP drivers including Musk are a big chunk of the resource for self-driving software learning.

We are not making this up! Musk and his favorite VIPs are getting a truly personalized machine-learning experience while using self-driving software.

Current and former Tesla staff members have revealed that the automaker provides special attention to data from VIPs, including Elon Musk himself, during the training of its self-driving AI. According to these sources, employees were instructed to prioritize routes driven by Musk and influential individuals within the Tesla community. Here’s everything to know.

FSD to Run on Elon Musk’s Driving

Based on a report by Business Insider, Elon Musk has directed Tesla to prioritize FSD routes that he personally uses and those used by special content creators promoting Tesla’s FSD capabilities.

Tesla employs a team of “data annotators” who review footage from the cameras of thousands of Tesla vehicles to train the AI to drive like a human. However, these annotators are instructed to focus on two main categories: Musk’s personal vehicles and a select group of VIP drivers, which includes bloggers who create Tesla-related content.

Ideally, these human annotators should be using data from a wide array to get a better level of machine learning. However, some employees argue that prioritizing routes for VIP drivers is actually beneficial. Why? According to them, content creators often push the FSD system to its limits providing valuable data to improve the neural networks.

Nonetheless, this practice has led to raised concerns that VIP drivers receive a superior FSD experience compared to the average Tesla driver.

Tesla Autopilot Machine Learning

What is wrong if machine learning relies on Musk and his friends for self-driving? Well, quite a lot. Self-driving systems are not fully AI-based but rely on a human team of data annotators.

These human annotators are responsible for reviewing footage from Tesla vehicles to help the vehicle understand and behave like a human driver. Simply put these human footage analyzers train the vehicle software. Just like the ads and data on your feed.

The problem is, that these guys should be analyzing data from a larger pool of global databases to effectively register diversified driving conditions. But. They are only doing it for Elon and some VIP members which makes their experience better but does the least for others.

Tesla Autopilot to Learn Only Elon Musk’s Style

Reports from Business Insider suggest Elon Musk’s driving data gets special attention, with workers remembering annotating footage from his car. They also focus heavily on routes around Tesla’s factories in Texas and California, while competitors’ sites receive less attention.

Former employees say this prioritization might skew the software’s performance, potentially giving Musk a better driving experience than others. In one case, an annotator reportedly faced consequences for mislabeling a highway exit sign in footage believed to be from Musk’s car.

Employees list many such occasions where they had to focus on Musk and his favorites only. Business Insiders lists and explains these incidents in detail.

One Reddit user sums up the current scenario saying how law is absent.

At what point will the law come down. They are selling cars on the promise that they will soon drive themselves for years now we’ll knowing that those cars cannot and will never do that. What does it need? This is insane!

Bottomline

Is Elon Musk really getting a much better experience with his company’s driver assistance software than others? Recent reports indicate it’s likely the case.

Walter Isaacson’s 2023 biography includes various incidents like in 2015, Musk reportedly went to Tesla’s office upset that his car had acted dangerously while in self-driving mode. They found a faded line on Interstate 405 was the issue, so Tesla chose to repaint it instead of adjusting the software.

So, what Tesla is doing is to make only one person happy!
