Tesla’s AI Chief Hints at Cybervan RV Equipped with Full Self Driving

A short, yet very eye-catching exchange on X, between Tesla VP of AI, Ashok Elluswamy, and the Y Combinator CEO, Garry Tan, resulted in an exciting reply on Elluswamy’s part: “On it”. The image was of a smooth, futuristic vehicle that looks like it is a hybrid between a shuttle pod and a next-generation RV, immediately inspiring the imagination that Tesla is creating a fully autonomous recreational vehicle.

Although Tesla has not been explicitly referred to as a “Cybervan,” the suggestion made is raising excitement in the fanbase who have long hoped Tesla would take Full Self-Driving (FSD) to larger and lifestyle-oriented vehicles. And with the executive behind the Tesla autonomous driving project, it comes as a signal stronger than a typical social-media tease.

A Peek at the RV Future of Tesla

The vehicle depicted has a simple, capsule-shaped appearance, wraparound windows, and aerodynamic styling. Its design language seems aligned to the trend of recent Tesla robotaxi prototypes and the geometric minimalism of Cybertruck.

This may be a never-ending design, or not, but the suggestion is strong enough: Tesla envisions the possibility of autonomous mobility not just in personal cars but also in travel, work, and living areas on wheels.

RV culture has become a hype, and electric RVs are considered to be the next wave; however, no major manufacturer has managed to release a mass-market electric RV with integrated autonomy. The entry of Tesla into the space would immediately reshape it.

Why Tesla Could Be Working on a Cybervan

FSD Is Heading Towards Autonomy-First Vehicles

The next-generation car structure and robotaxi platform that Tesla will implement is oriented toward autonomous functionality and not the convenience of drivers. The performance or tight driving dynamics are unnecessary with an RV; it is more interested in predictable and efficient autonomous driving, which makes it a logical application of the evolving FSD suite at Tesla.

Long-Range Travel Is Made Possible by Battery Leadership

Tesla is the largest EV battery ecosystem in the world. A car with high energy demands, like an RV, will be much more feasible with Tesla structural battery packs, 4680 cells, and the Supercharger network.

An Ideal Application of AI + Space Utilization

The self-driving RVs open the way towards mobile offices, mobile bedrooms, and mobile lounges into which passengers can rest as the car takes care of all their routing and charging needs. The philosophy of minimalism in the interior can suit Tesla.

Contending With the Camper Van Renaissance

The emergence of van-life culture, the overlanding trend in boom, and a new wave of interest in compact living are all indicative of a market that is expanding. An RV designed by Tesla would immediately become the technologically advanced one.

What a Tesla Cybervan May Have

Provided that, in fact, the company is working on an autonomous RV, the most consistent features in accordance with the roadmap and engineering capabilities of Tesla include:

  • Self-Driving mode, rather than add-on.
  • Flexible sleeping, work, dining, and family travel interior design.
  • Solar-powered roof panels (based on the solar tonneau concept of Cybertruck).
  • Off-grid living, heat-pump HVAC, Ultra-efficient.
  • The intelligent energy control that will connect with the Starlink and the Powerwall ecosystem of Tesla.
  • Camera-only perception stack, next-generation, just what the Elluswamy team has been developing.
  • Robotaxi-level safety measures, such as redundant compute and power systems.

Albeit everything is only speculation, all of this is present within the Tesla technology stack.
