Six Seater Long Wheelbase Model Y Spotted in Tesla’s 2025.20 Software Code

In a recent discovery sparking buzz in the Tesla community, the so-called long-wheelbase (LWB) variant of the Model Y has been spotted in the 2025.20 version of Tesla software code. The most exciting aspect of the given version is that it will feature a 6-seat configuration, which is quite a diversification from the current 5- and 7-seat options. Though this model was earlier believed to target only the Chinese customers, the signs of the update suggest that Tesla may have bigger plans.

An Inside Look at the Code

Tesla software upgrades are also another way of gaining a little perspective on what might be coming next in terms of both hardware and software from the company. There are references to a Model Y variant called LWB and specific seating layouts suggesting a 6-seat layout in a code that some clever Tesla observers and code-crackers have been poring through the 2025.20 code.

The long-wheelbase variant is presumed to have a larger impression than the existing international Model Y, which would mean greater legroom in the second and third rows, additional rear-seat accommodation, and possibly extra interior space. The layout theory uses six seats, proposing captain chairs in the second row will be used, which previously existed in the Model X and is intended to enhance the comfort of the passengers and their ease of access to the third seat.

Not Just China?

In May 2025, Tesla started assembling the long-wheelbase Model Y at its Shanghai Gigafactory, though it is targeted primarily at the Chinese market, where a bigger rear seat is among the significant selling points because many customers in this market have a driver. Until today, many people have assumed that this model would be exclusive to China.

Nevertheless, the appearance of this variant in the world software package points in the other direction, especially taking into account that it appeared not in a locale-specific, regionally oriented build. Reports and insider sources backing the development teams at Tesla and past leakages of software suggest that the LWB Model Y can find its way into other regions such as North America and Europe, especially as the markets embrace the bigger and comfortable SUVs.

The Reason Behind a 6-Seater Model Y

It will be positioned as a strong middle ground between the original 5-seater version Model Y, and a more luxurious (and costly) Model X. This would permit Tesla an opportunity to reach a larger audience by making available captain chairs, as well as more space, without having to jump into the realm of the Model X which would cost close to and even above $90,000, Tesla could provide more customers with more family-friendly, luxury-type amenities at a comparatively lower pricing.

Moreover, the LWB model would enable Tesla to compete more effectively with new electric SUVs of the legacies, such as Ford, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz, most of which already plan to introduce three-rowed EVs by 2025 and later.

The Possible Features and The Specs

Although official specifications have not been announced, the longer wheel base should not only mean additional leg room. It can be offered with the improvements in the ride comfort, possibly the suspension tuning being better, and even better battery packaging, which may extend the range. Other cosmetic changes, which serve as the hallmark of Tesla based on the past trends, may be changing wheels, rear cabin design, and climate control features available on both the second and third rows.

Tesla has not publicly announced the global launch of the long-wheelbase Model Y. Nevertheless, history would dictate that when a new model is implemented in the software code, a wider change is likely to follow. The same goes for recent updates to the Model S and Model X, which first appeared as a result of software updates before being officially announced by Tesla.
