Hyundai’s Another Electric Car and Hydrogen Fuel Car Arrived In India

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric car was on display at the inauguration of Hyundai’s India headquarters in Gurgaon. Ioniq is Hyundai’s subbrand specializing in electric vehicles. The Ioniq is the first vehicle under the Ioniq 5 brand. It is based on the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) and is available with two battery options 58kWh and 72.6kWh. The base version has an electric motor which makes 165 BHP and 350 Nm while powering the rear wheels. This version can accelerate from 0 – 100 km/hr in 8.6s.

The bigger battery with the single motor has a range of up to 480km (WLTP). This electric motor produces an output of 211 BHP and 350Nm. The 72.6 kWh battery pack offers a dual-motor version that produces 298 BHP and 605Nm and reaches 100 km/hr in 5.2s. The Ioniq 5 can be quickly charged from 10% to 80% in 18 minutes using a 350kW fast charger. Size-wise, the Ioniq 5 is slightly bigger than the Elite i20, and approximately the size of the sub 4m compact SUVs for sale in India.

When Hyundai was asked about the launch of the Ioniq 5 in India, SS Kim MD and CEO at Hyundai Motors India Limited (HMIL) said “The EV movement is strong in the two and three-wheeled segments. We are studying the feasibility and much would depend on customer preference.” He also said that affordability and charging infrastructure remain the key concerns for buyers in the country. Kim also added that government support is pivotal in making electric cars more popular. “We need demand from the market. Support from the government is vital with more subsidies for even private customers.”

Hyundai currently has only one electric car in the private vehicle segment in India, which is the Kona EV. In June 2021, the Kona EV sold only 7 units. There are many factors as to why this may have happened. But the Ioniq 5 is an EV completely built from the ground up which is launched in India at an attractive price along with good charging infrastructure, it could be a very strong contender in the EV space in India.

Hyundai also showcased their Hydrogen vehicle the Nexo at their headquarter inauguration in Gurgaon. The Nexo is a hydrogen fuel electric vehicle (FCEV) that runs by generating electricity by mixing oxygen with compressed hydrogen stored in the tank to create a flow of electrons. This generated electricity is then used to power the motors of the car. The Nexo offers up to 611.5 km (380 miles) of range per fill-up. It has a 95kW fuel cell stack and a 40 kWh battery pack which powers an electric motor. Power is transmitted by a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor via a Single Speed Reduction Gear transmission. The electric motor produces 162 HP and 395 Nm of torque. It has a top speed of 179 km/hr. The only emissions produced by the Nexo is pure clean water.

A Hyundai Nexo driven by a team from Australia has broken the world record for the longest distance traveled by a hydrogen-powered vehicle on a single tank. The 887.5 km world record zero-emission trip showcases the immense potential of hydrogen as a clean fuel source. Hyundai is the first company that pioneered the mass production of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) globally.

“Being a rally driver, I’ve always wanted to achieve a world record, but I could have never guessed it would come about this way.”
