The ninth-generation model is the official next step in the new era of Toyota’s legendary Hilux, which now also has an all-electric pickup truck in its lineup. Introduced in Thailand, the world center of Hilux production, the redesigned line of trucks has diesel, mild-hybrid, hydrogen fuel-cell, and battery-electric models.

Although American customers will not encounter this electric Hilux because the Tacoma will occupy the same niche, the introduction is a significant milestone in Toyota’s global electrification project.

New Capability with Electric Powertrain

The most interesting model, which is admittedly the Hilux BEV, is a dual-motor electric four-wheel drive that lacks a conventional transfer case. The design incorporates a single electric motor per axle, with an overall output of 193 horsepower (144 kilowatts). The front motor provides 151 pound-feet (205 Newton-meters) of torque, and the rear provides an extra 198 lb-ft (269 Nm) to provide consistent traction and instant response characteristic of modern EVs.

The lithium-ion battery pack is a 59.2-kWh pack that is located under the floor, between the ladder-frame rails. This position enhances stability by reducing the center of gravity and assists in maintaining interior space, which is a key consideration for the workers who need the comfort and functionality of the Hilux. A DC fast charger can charge the truck with up to 150 kW, but Toyota still has not announced the Level 2 charging duration.

A Modest Range Designed for Real-World Work

The factor that has been under the most attention of the Hilux BEV is its driver range, estimated to be approximately 150 miles (240 kilometers) in the WLTP cycle. This is a modest figure in comparison with the competitors, such as the Ford F-150 Lightning or the Rivian R1T.

However, the electric Hilux seems to be targeted by Toyota at those with predictable routes, such as farmers, small businesses, regional contractors, and fleet operators, who usually have short routes daily. Long-range capability may not be of value to these people as much as overnight charging, low maintenance needs, and the ability to operate silently.

The pickup still has meaningful working credentials despite its smaller battery. Toyota positions payload at 1,576 lb (715 kilograms) and towing at 3,527 lb (1,600 kilograms), which are sufficient to suit the requirements of the majority of commercial and agricultural applications.

More Daring Design and Modern Interiors

The ninth-generation Hilux has a more aggressive but modernistic appearance. The front fascia draws inspiration from the newest Land Cruiser and the U.S. specification Tacoma and supports its vigorous, squared-off appearance. Through increased body lines, muscular position, and improved lighting, the truck has a contemporary yet rough style.

Toyota has used technology to incorporate tradition in the cabin. The update features a pair of 12.3-inch infotainment and digital instrument cluster screens. Notably, Toyota retained logical amounts of physical climate and vehicle controls that can be used in the rough working conditions.

The infotainment system can be updated through the air, which means that the truck can obtain new functionality and performance improvements many years after it has been purchased. The Hilux also has electric power steering, which is making its debut appearance.
