Tesla Set to Add Grok AI in Upcoming June 2025 Software Update

People are already talking about the Tesla 2025.20.x software update, which is expected to add Grok, an AI chatbot by xAI, to the Tesla vehicles. Even though Tesla has not confirmed, recent events and leaks suggest that an update for Grok is going through internal testing, and people are discussing if Tesla vehicles will include Grok. But take it with a grain of salt, as these are just rumors.

Elon Musk launched xAI, an AI company, in 2023, and it created Grok, an AI chatbot. People describe Grok as an unfiltered and direct alternative to chatbots like ChatGPT, mostly because of its close ties to X (formerly Twitter). Since it was introduced, Grok has become part of the X platform for Premium+ users as part of Musk’s effort to join AI, social media, and live data into a digital assistant.

Taking Grok to Tesla’s vehicles would logically be the following step for Musk as he works to unite his brands’ AI systems. If these reports turn out to be correct, behind-the-wheel Tesla drivers could get Grok services, allowing them to chat with conversational AI and get tips for tasks, navigation support, assistance with their cars, and mentions from fresh social media posts.

What We Know So Far

The software tracker databases of the Tesla community discovered the 2025.20.x version only a few days ago. Based on what’s contained in early internal builds, there are clear indications that some things are being changed to support the launch of a voice assistant or large language model. The new system includes updates to how we talk to it and more ways to stay connected, which are essential for a vehicle AI assistant to function properly.

Insiders within Tesla and members of the community have suggested the update is currently being tested by employees and the new Grok features are being tried out in small-scale releases. Still, because these are early tests, features may be added or taken away, and the software may change before being released.

Could Grok play a role in Tesla’s AI?

If Grok becomes part of the 2025.20.x release, it will likely improve upon existing voice control in a major way. The Tesla assistant right now is able to handle functions like directing the car, controlling the media or modifying temperature settings. Contrary to it, Grok would include features for questions, jokes, knowing the context, and accessing material from the internet.

Imagine talking to your Tesla about:

Hi Grok, which nearby supercharger has vacant stalls for me right now?
Or:
Is there any traffic on I-80 now, and when can I reach downtown San Francisco?

Because Grok is linked to live data and has a distinct character, answers could be both interesting and useful.

It is even said that Grok would use over-the-air technology to modify the assistance based on what each driver likes. It would bring more customization to Tesla software than what is currently offered.

Bottomline

Even though everybody is excited, we should learn to manage our expectations. Many features that Tesla internally tests are not implemented in their public releases. Rumors suggest it will be launched along with Robotaxi in June. Moreover, Tesla has to pay attention to the challenges related to regulations, privacy and safety since a chatty AI assistant will be accompanying drivers in a moving car.
