Tesla Owners Lash Out at Non-Tesla Drivers Charging at Superchargers

With more electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers gaining access to the Tesla Supercharger network, a shocking and controversial fight has broken out among EV owners. Tesla drivers who were used to having exclusive access to the Supercharger system are now out of patience, and some are even hostile toward the owners of other EV brands who are charging at Supercharger stations. What started as a technical change has soon become a culture war on social media and at the charging lots all over the country.

Among Tesla-focused Facebook pages, users have been posting pictures and complaints of non-Tesla cars occupying multiple parking spaces of charging stations. One particularly viral post showed a non-Tesla EV parked across two Supercharger spots because the extremely short charging cable could not reach the vehicle’s port otherwise.

Tesla, however, has officially asked non-Tesla EV drivers to park in two stalls in case they are in need, but Tesla owners are responding with anger. Some of the remarks made by Tesla owners were:

“Any EV besides Tesla is a joke anyway.”

“They should be grateful that Tesla let them use a Tesla charger.”

“Manufacturers knew they’d use Tesla chargers, and they still put the port on the wrong side.”

These responses point to an increasing resentment among some Tesla drivers that they are having their previously exclusive charging ecosystem shared unwillingly.

The Other Side of the Story: Tesla Owners Who Understand

Not all Tesla owners share this resentment. Some are aware of Tesla’s own guidelines and recognize that the real problem is the design of the Superchargers themselves.
Comments of more sympathetic owners were:

This division among the Tesla community reveals that even as much frustration is evident among them, there is also the understanding that infrastructural deficiencies are not the cause of non-Tesla drivers.

Non-Tesla Owners Report Confrontations and Harassment

Non-Tesla EV drivers have posted tense experiences with unfriendly Tesla drivers, especially in Mustang Mach-E forums. Mach-E drivers have received verbal abuse and have even been mocked and called the police by an angry Tesla owner who insisted that there were only Superchargers to charge Teslas. The police officer who responded is reported to have rebuked the Tesla driver.

Another Mach-E owner gave a great explanation as to why the resentment is there: Tesla owners had been sold a dream that they would be offered a private high-end network with exclusive privileges. With the network going public and the competition on chargers rising, there is a feeling that their investment is ruined.

Some of the anger can be attributed to history. Several years ago, Tesla had guaranteed early users that Superchargers were Tesla-only and free most of the time. In the long run, the free charging was eliminated, and exclusivity was reversed when Tesla sought government subsidies when opening its network.

This shift has blindsided many long-time owners, which has been a source of the emotional response that is visible on the Internet and at the charging stations.

The Future: Longer Cables and More Chargers Will Ease the Pressure

The “EV charging war” may be loud now, but it’s unlikely to last. Several factors point toward an upcoming resolution:

  • More DC fast-charging stations are opening across the U.S.
  • EV sales growth has slowed, easing demand for chargers.
  • Tesla has acknowledged the design flaw and plans to install longer charging cables suitable for all EV models.
  • Federal funding is accelerating the development of multi-brand charging hubs.

The current tension is part of a transition phase as the charging ecosystem modernizes.
