At Hyundai’s recent Investor Day event, the South Korean automaker confirmed developing the N Vision 74 into a hydrogen-powered supercar, codenamed the N74. The N74 is said to cost about six to seven times more than Hyundai’s priciest car right now, the Ioniq 5 N. With a price tag of over 350,000 euros, it will be in the supercar range.

Hyundai’s N74’s closest rivals might be the next-gen Tesla Roadster and the Lotus Type 135. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming Supercar N74!

Hyundai N74 Is Confirmed For Production

Hyundai has confirmed it will turn the N Vision 74 into a hydrogen-powered supercar, called the N74. Sharing the exciting news on Investor’s Day Hyundai is already making serious moves to bring this car to life. The company has given its suppliers the specifications for key components.

They are even planning to produce a trial car in August for performance verification. They are planning to go ahead with full-scale production from June 2026 if all goes well.

A slide showed Hyundai’s plan to launch 21 new models by 2023 across its Casper, Hyundai, Genesis, and N brands. The slide included images of the Genesis GV60 Magma and Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, with a note about upcoming high-performance EVs, including the N Vision 74 and Genesis Magma.

Design

The N Vision 74 stunned everyone with its looks when it first debuted. It looked incredible with retro and futuristic design elements blending in a tribute to the 1974 Hyundai Pony Coupe.

Its bold look featured a sharp nose, boxy cabin, and the sleek lines of a ’70s sports car, reimagined with a modern edge. The result was a striking, retro-futuristic aesthetic as if a classic sports car had been given a fresh body kit straight out of a Gran Turismo video game.

Power and Performance

The N74 won’t just look retro stunning; it is going to be a roaring supercar. The car will use a hydrogen fuel cell combined with a powerful electric motor, delivering over 775 horsepower. It can go 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) in just under three seconds.

The N74’s design will be a modern take on Hyundai’s classic 1974 Pony Coupe. It will feature sleeker lines and dramatic ‘gull-wing’ doors that open upwards, a nod to the company’s history.

A Limited, High-Priced Car

Hyundai will only produce 200 units of the N74 over two years once in production. The car is expected to cost around 500 million KRW, which is about $375,000 or 345,000 EUR. With such limited production, it will be a rare, high-end model.

In terms of power, the N74 will outshine some of the most iconic supercars, including the Ferrari Roma and Lamborghini Huracan. But, as some critics point out, the car may face challenges.

One Reddit user commented that it is going to be a pricey novelty. Moreover, he added that the lack of hydrogen fueling stations for hydrogen vehicles, especially in the U.S., could make them impractical outside of areas like California.

Another Reddit user went gaga over the fact that it will be taking over as the Sports EV brand.

More Than Just a Supercar

For Hyundai, the N74 isn’t just about creating a supercar. The company wants to use it to promote hydrogen technology. Hyundai is committed to building a ‘hydrogen ecosystem’ and sees this car as a way to boost interest in hydrogen energy.

Hyundai’s Chairman, Chung Eui-sun, has been quite vocal about the importance of hydrogen. At CES 2024, he said, “Despite the challenges, someone must lead the way in hydrogen adoption, and we are committed to this mission.”

The N Vision 74’s bold design may be toned down before production, much like how the Honda Urban EV became softer when it became the Honda E. Still, it’s exciting that Hyundai is making it.

Whether it will actually use a hydrogen fuel cell is unclear due to limited fueling stations, but the N Vision 74 is sure to turn heads when it arrives.

Bottomline

The N74 with its bold looks and power is going to raise the supercar bar once the production model is revealed. Hyundai is all up for pushing hydrogen fuel cell technology forward. By developing this car, Hyundai is clearly stating that they think hydrogen can play a major role in the shift to cleaner, zero-emission vehicles.

The N74 might be out of reach for most people, but its striking, retro-futuristic look has already grabbed attention. What do you think of this hydrogen vehicle’s stunning retro feel?
