Just a few days back, Tesla launched its new Model Y Standard in the United States, and now Tesla is again diversifying its Model Y lineup, this time in China. Tesla’s new model is called Model Y+, as per the fresh documents provided to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) of China.
The next model will be the one with the longest driving range in the Model Y family, a significant move in Tesla’s current trend to sustain its market leadership in the largest electric vehicle (EV) market in the world.
Tesla Model Y+: What We Know So Far
This is confirmed by the MIIT registration that the Tesla Model Y+ is actually a five-seater electric SUV, matching the design of the existing Model Y that is already sold in China. The size, too, has been similar, 4,797mm in length, 1,920mm in width, 1,624mm in height, and a 2,890mm wheelbase. These numbers are comparable to those of the existing Model Y, indicating that the new version will not differ significantly in terms of size or overall design but will offer some improvements under the hood.
The + on the Model Y+ does not seem to represent size, but range or performance increase. The observers of the industry suggest that Tesla may be launching a new battery pack, which is, probably, more energy-dense, and the car will be able to be more efficient and cover a greater distance on a single charge.
Tesla’s filing hints that the Model Y+ will have the highest mileage among all the versions of Model Y. The present Model Y Long Range model being sold in China offers a maximum range of 688 km (CLTC). This figure will be beaten by the Model Y+, which may reach and maybe even beyond 750 km (CLTC) with the battery arrangement.
The considerably high range increase may be associated with Tesla 4680 battery cells or the company’s novel high-nickel battery chemistry in collaboration with its Chinese partners, such as CATL or LG Energy Solution. This decision is part of Tesla’s strategy to regionalize its battery technology – i.e., affordability in the standard versions, and have a long range in the higher versions.

Strategic Importance in China
China is a very critical market to Tesla, not only as a consumer but also as a manufacturing center. The Shanghai Gigafactory is the biggest production facility of Tesla outside the United States, which is another export hub to Asia and Europe.
The introduction of the Model Y+ in China initially highlights the fact that Tesla is keen on fulfilling the demands of the local market, and driving range is one of the most important aspects of a new model among customers. Longer-range cars are usually considered high-end products, and they can appeal to buyers who want to have both utility and performance.
In addition, the introduction of the Model Y+ would enable Tesla to compete with local EV manufacturers like BYD, Xiaomi, NIO, and Li Auto, which have been rapidly innovating and launching long-range SUVs within the same price bands.
