Tesla has officially announced a left-turn signal stalk retrofit of the Model 3 throughout Europe as a response to the widespread desire among customers to have a conventional control switch back. The retrofit package costs €660 (approximately $775) and can be purchased by Model 3 cars manufactured in 2023, 2024, and 2025 that were shipped without a turn-signal stalk. The cost is inclusive of shipping and installation at the Tesla Service Center of the choice of customer.
Retrofit is a shocking, but most welcome, Tesla move. In 2023, the automaker released the updated Model 3 Highland, which removed the traditional turn-signal stalks and replaced them with touch-sensitive buttons on the steering wheel. Although this new design fit in the philosophy of minimalism (as practiced at Tesla), the change was criticized by many owners who claimed that it was cumbersome to signal and particularly during quick turns or lane changes.
This retrofit seems to accept such feedback. Tesla is also providing an opportunity to choose to revert to the stalk, which is sure to attract drivers who feel the controls and muscle memory of physical controls, a little but important respect to the comfort and safety of the users.
Details of the Retrofit Package
According to Tesla’s official product description, the €660 retrofit package includes:
- A steering column left turn-signal stalk.
- Complete integration with 2023-2025 stalkless Model 3 vehicles.
- To deliver directly to the service center of the customer’s choice.
- Professional installation is included in the total price.
Although the retrofit is already present in the majority of European markets, Tesla has affirmed that it is not present at the moment in the UK. Nevertheless, since there is a high number of British Tesla owners, supply in the area can be expected soon.

Why Tesla Removed the Stalks
The move to eliminate turn-signal stalks at Tesla was among its larger initiatives to bring to the driving interface a more futuristic, minimalist, and software-based driver interface. The reason stated by the company was that touch-controlled controls, along with the intelligent driving aid, would make the driver’s input easier and would also cut down on the number of mechanical parts.
The Highland Model 3 also had new steering-wheel-mounted capacitive touch buttons to signal and camera-assisted Auto Turn Signal functions. Nonetheless, there were mixed user experiences, particularly in areas where manual signaling has to be frequently applied.
Most owners complained that the design was easy to clean, but it was not user-friendly when it came to high-speed driving or complicated maneuvers. The new retrofit is actually providing the drivers with a decision between innovation and familiarity.
Growing Trend of Tesla Retrofitting
Tesla has slowly been extending its retrofit solutions – a significant change given the fact that the company used to be characterized by a hardware philosophy of take it or leave it. Other new ones are matrix LED headlight upgrades and ambient lighting retrofits of some models.
Such flexibility could become the new stage in the development of Tesla, during which hardware customization will become a part of its after-sales policy. Tesla can improve customer satisfaction and turnover by incorporating feedback provided by users and providing high-end retrofit opportunities.
