The rumored Tesla Model Y L 6-seater has been seen testing in China. The new Tesla Model Y is more than just newsworthy in and of itself; its appearance in Xinjiang is almost unprecedented in that particular area. And it is the first instance of the upcoming long-wheelbase (LWB) variant of the Model Y spotted out and about, providing not only the first clues as to its design and interior layout but also offering tangible evidence of the much-hyped 19-inch wheels.

A First Impression of the Model Y L

Model Y L, the long-awaited Tesla electric vehicle, appears to be closer to production as photos and videos of the lightly disguised prototypes being tested on the roads in Xinjiang emerge. Although the front and back parts are still largely inspired by the overall design of the existing Model Y, the L version also has a noticeably longer-looking hind part in it, which is consistent with the characteristic that allows adding a third row of passengers to it in a more space-efficient 2+2+2 configuration.

This 6-seat variant separates it from the currently offered one. However, Giga Shanghai is likely to become the production center of this model, and the company is likely to address the reaction of the Chinese consumers before a potential worldwide launch. Even though there is no official statement from Tesla yet, regulatory filings and leaks among suppliers suggest that it should be available in late 2025 or early 2026.

A quick rundown of the 19-inch wheels

It is also notable to mention the public debut of the new 19-inch wheels, which have also been long-anticipated since the upcoming wheels were mentioned in prior digital renders and regulatory filings. The test model in Xinjiang seems to be using a novel wheel design that does not look out of place, being aerodynamic and smoother in appearance compared to the existing Gemini 19-inch wheels provided by most trims of the Model Y.

These new wheels might be able to enhance range and efficiency, which Tesla has always focused on when it comes to making changes. Technical specifications regarding the same have not been released yet, but initial speculations point to these wheels being part of the strategy to improve the already stellar electric range of the Model Y.

What It Means to the Tesla Lineup

It is strategically important that the Model Y L appears. Already, the Model Y is one of the most popular electric vehicles globally, and by having a six-seat model, Tesla would expand its market opportunities, especially in the expansive premium EV segment in China. It would also enable Tesla to compete more effectively with larger EV SUVs, such as the Li Auto L7, NIO ES6, and XPeng G9, which prioritize luxury and spaciousness.

Provided that the Model Y L turns out to be successful in the Chinese market, Tesla can take into consideration the option of offering it in other markets where people want to purchase larger family vehicles like the one introduced by the company to China, e.g., Europe or North America.
