Affordable Tesla Seen at Crash Test Facility Without Glass Roof and Light Bar

Tesla is fond of disrupting the automotive industry, not only through the introduction of high-tech electric vehicles, but also by making unexpected changes to the lineup that frequently lead to speculation. The newest rumor is of a potential new, cheaper version of the Model Y. Recent data and photographs indicate that Tesla may be about to launch a more affordable version of its most popular electric SUV, one that omits certain classic design features and luxuries.

While there are hints at subtle design modifications to the Model Y, and a covered car that some fans and analysts believe is a testing prototype at Tesla’s GigaTexas crash test center, it looks like Tesla is about to expand its product range in unexpected directions.

Tesla Could Be Launching a Cheaper Model Y

The Model Y has already been sold more worldwide than any other Tesla vehicle, and it is even selling more than the Model 3 sedan in most markets, like China. Affordability, however, is an issue that is still facing many consumers who are willing to switch to electric cars but are discouraged by the high costs at the point of purchase.

Emission laws are being made stricter across governments all over the world, and competitors in China and Europe are flooding the EV market with small, cheap solutions. Tesla can expand with a lower-priced, more affordable Model Y and compete more effectively in cost-conscious markets in Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, and some areas of Latin America.

The Missing Glass Roof: The Trading Off?

The glass roof has been one of the most popular design features in Tesla, which provides wide views of the sky and a feeling of openness. But it also introduces expense, complexity, and weight. Tesla may save a lot of manufacturing cost by removing the glass roof and using a less complex metal top, but also increase the rigidity of the structure and thermal performance.

Some of the customers in markets with really hot or cold climates will actually choose a traditional roof because they will be better insulated and will use less cabin heat. The elimination of the glass roof can be a cost-benefit win both financially and practically.

No Front Light Bar: Minimizing the Appearance.

The other rumored change is the lack of the smooth LED light bar spanning the front fascia of the Model Y. Though that contributes to the futuristic styling, it is more of an aesthetic accolade than a functional requirement. The exterior lighting can be simplified to allow Tesla to save on costs without affecting the identity of the vehicle.

This is in line with the simple philosophy of Tesla, which just manufactures things in a simplified way. Elon Musk has stressed on several occasions the need to design vehicles that are simpler to construct, in terms of parts used and complexity. Cutting extraneous design elements augers well with that vision.

GigaTexas Mystery Prototype

To make the fire burn even harder, a prototype of a new vehicle has been observed covered by a wrap at the Tesla crash-testing facility, GigaTexas. What is interesting about this in particular is that the covered car is significantly shorter than a Model Y, implying that this was not a modification but a completely distinct model.

There have been two sides to speculation:

CyberCab: Tesla has long flirted with a robotaxi notion, which Elon Musk has suggested will be shaped like a futuristic van. Provided that this prototype is intended to be an autonomous ride-hailing vehicle, its reduced footprint might be more efficient in terms of space utilization in urban areas.

A New Compact EV: Some think this may be the long-hyped Model 2 or compact hatchback, a smaller, cheaper EV designed to sell in volume. Tesla has already assured that there is a next-generation platform under development that will cost half the price of the Model 3 and Y. It is possible that this sighting could be the first one.
