Tesla seems to be making another tangible move towards the release of its next-generation Roadster, which was announced many years ago. The electric car manufacturer has registered new trademark applications relating to the next car, which indicates that an official release might be closer than anticipated.

Two different applications for the name Roadster have been registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) recently. One of the filings shows a stylized “Roadster” wordmark, and the other appears to allude to a design detail on the car, possibly suggesting new branding or the finished external appearance of the production version.

A Strong Signal From Tesla

Trademark filings are often among the final formalities before a product reveal or market launch. Although the companies regularly safeguard the intellectual property at the initial stages of the development, new applications, in particular, stylized branding elements often show that the visual identity of a product is being cemented.

In the case of Tesla, this action indicates that the fourth-generation Roadster is perhaps approaching a later stage of its life cycle. The Roadster prototype was initially presented by the company in 2017 and impressed the audience with its bold statements of record-breaking speed, extreme top speed, and range no electric sports car had ever been able to do before.

The Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, then said that the car was a hardcore smackdown to the gasoline-powered supercars.

What You Should Know about the Next-gen Roadster

The second generation Roadster was at first launched as a sequel to the initial production model the original Tesla Roadster. The new version, however, lies in a totally different league.

Tesla stated the next roadster would have:

  • Acceleration from 0-60mph in under 1.9 seconds
  • The time is about 8.8 seconds at a quarter-mile
  • A top speed exceeding 250 mph
  • A 200 kWh battery pack
  • Up to 620 miles (1,000 km) of range

Should these figures be attained, the Roadster would become one of the fastest production cars in the world, whether powered by electricity or not.

With further time, Musk has foreshadowed further ambitious abilities, such as a possible package of SpaceX that may include cold air thrusters, to provide better acceleration and manoeuvrability. Though these features are just in the air, yet to be officially announced, they have just added more excitement to the car.

Why the Trademark Matters

The newly registered stylized brand may also mean that Tesla is planning a rebranding dedicated to the Roadster. This may involve revised badging, new typography, or a design approach that will make the model stand out from the rest of the Tesla range.

The second filing, which seems to make reference to the design of the vehicle, could indicate that Tesla has completed major aesthetic changes. It may indicate minor alterations to the prototype of 2017 and may have made the car smoother, better aerodynamic, or more sculpted.

Organisations usually apply trademarks to unique design features to guard them throughout the world prior to their introduction. Tesla, in this instance, also gives a hint of this idea by the fact that the Roadster is no longer a far-off dream, but is a product that is on the verge of a public milestone.
