Tesla has led the EV market through the years with its innovative Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y lineup. And now the automotive industry speculates that Tesla is developing a scaled-down version of Model Y with potential naming as the Tesla Model Q. Recently it was spotted at the Tesla facility in Texas via drone footage. The potential launch of this vehicle would find major success specifically in European cities which are primarily populated by small-sized automobiles.
What is the Tesla Model Q?
The Tesla Model Q is rumoured to be a more affordable version of the will Model Y which caters to a budget segment by challenging Volkswagen ID.3 and Renault Megane E-Tech as well as the upcoming electric Mini. Despite being affordable, the Model Q will carry Tesla’s signature design language—minimalist interiors, aerodynamic styling, and cutting-edge technology—but in a smaller, more city-friendly form factor.
While there is no official confirmation from Tesla, new concept renders suggest a compact crossover or hatchback body featuring a smooth coupe profile. The vehicle would probably measure 168 inches long allowing users to navigate easily between traffic but offer adequate space for households.
Do you think Tesla’s new affordable model will be a whole new vehicle model built on the 3/Y platform, but smaller?
Or do you think just stripped out versions of the current 3/Y are coming? (I.e textile seats, no rear screen, no dual pane glass, etc.) pic.twitter.com/dbmgtMz3eu

A Mystery Model Y (Potentially Model Q) Spotted in Texas
The drone footage released by Tesla enthusiast Joe Tegtmeyer from Austin Texas generated significant interest for electric vehicle followers. One black Tesla vehicle stands out due to its complete camouflage covering at Tesla’s factory facility where other vehicles are parked. The extensive camouflage covers every aspect of both the front and rear of the car together with part of the dashboard revealing substantial redesign work throughout the vehicle.
A conspicuous fact within the recorded video reveals that the Tesla vehicle looks smaller than regular Model Y models. The speculative notion is that Tesla will build a reduced-size affordable SUV as its CEO Elon Musk has frequently discussed an economy EV during earnings calls.
Tesla has been indicating a more accessible model availability for the last twelve months. The organization announced within its Q3 2023 earnings update that:
“Preparations remain underway for our offering of new vehicles—including more affordable models—which we will begin launching in the first half of 2025.”
Potential Features of the Tesla Model Q
These are some of the speculated specifications of the upcoming Model Q since Tesla has yet to announce the official details regarding the new compact vehicle.
- Battery & Range: The anticipated 40–50 kWh battery system would give the model between 250 and 300 miles of travel distance for comparable small EVs in the market segment.
- Performance: A single-motor rear-wheel-drive variant for affordability, with a possible dual-motor AWD version for performance enthusiasts.
- Autopilot: The Autopilot & Full Self-Driving system will be part of the available advanced driver-assist features with FSD operating as an optional package.
- Minimalist Interior: Expect a large touchscreen, software-based controls, and a spacious cabin despite its compact size.
Strong Demand for Small EVs
The worldwide demand for compact electric vehicles rises because of rising fuel expenses and stricter pollution standards together with governmental benefits for electric vehicle adoption. Although Tesla has gained recognition through its larger vehicle lineup it does not actively address the small electric vehicle industry. The introduction of a Model Q at an appropriate price point would allow Tesla to access this expanding market segment thus expanding their sales base.
Electrical Vehicle adoption meets resistance mainly because of high prices across the market. The Model Y currently maintains its position as an expensive entry point even though Tesla has successfully cut down product costs. Tesla reportedly plans to launch a budget-friendly Model Q which would enter the market between $25,000 and $30,000 with federal subsidy programs. Such pricing would make the Model Q competitive with Volkswagen ID.3, Hyundai Kona Electric, and Fiat 500e.
