Tesla FSD Test Vehicle Spotted in Barcelona as EU Begins Independent Evaluation

A new Tesla Model Y was seen in Barcelona, which is again causing excitement over the possibility that Full Self-Driving (Supervised) will come to Europe. The car seemed to be equipped with a whole range of experimental equipment, indicating that Tesla is putting more real-life tests on the continent.

As Europe’s regulatory framework becomes more open to advanced driver-assistance technologies, such sightings are becoming more common and more significant.

Tesla FSD Test Vehicle Spotted in Barcelona

Major Indicators: Test Plates and Special Hardware

The Spanish temporary test plates were one of the most apparent aspects of the car, and it was characterized by the distinctive “S”. These vehicles are usually allocated to prototype cars and units that are in engineering testing, and it is highly indicative of the fact that this Model Y belongs to Tesla as a part of its internal development fleet and is not a customer vehicle.

To make the matter more interesting, a sensor was mounted on the roof, presumably a camera or some other optical equipment that was not available on regular Tesla vehicles. Although the production cars of Tesla are based on body-integrated cameras without any external sensor, such as LiDAR, the fact that this roof-mounted unit is present indicates that it should be calibrated, mapped, or collect data in a specific way.

This is not unlike the previous testing procedures of Tesla, particularly in the process of implementing FSD systems into new environments of driving environments.

There were also interior cameras that were spotted inside the cabin. This may be gathering information to conform to regulatory requirements, control driver conduct, or aid EU-mandated standards of monitoring drivers. The more conservative attitude of Europe towards driver-assistance technologies could require a more powerful interior sensing than Tesla has in North America.

Legacy Wheels Hint at Prototype Owned by Tesla

One more minor yet significant detail was the use of 20-inch Induction wheels that were in use. This option is highly uncharacteristic of new production vehicles, but typical in the internal test fleet, with older models often used to provide a development vehicle. This, together with the special sensors and test plates, further confirms the notion that the Barcelona Model Y is an engineering car that is used to refine FSD.

Hands-Free Driving Observation Brings Up Concerns

Perhaps the most important point was that the driver was not observed touching the steering wheel when the car was moving. Even though the FSD (Supervised) software offered by Tesla in the U.S. still requires the active attention of the driver, the camera-based monitoring system typically permits even the prolonged hands-off mode.

Provided this behavior is occurring in European testing, it could be that Tesla is testing an experience akin to that in the U.S., which could be an indicator that it is confident that the system will perform well on European roads.

The Implication of this on Tesla’s European FSD Ambitions

This is the most recent observation, which is also becoming consistent with various reports in other countries like Sweden, Germany, and Norway, all of which reported Tesla cars with weird sensors or demonstrated self-driving capabilities. These vehicles have become more commonplace over the last few months, indicating a concerted effort to gather data on regional specifics and meet different national regulatory requirements.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has stated on multiple occasions that he would like to bring FSD to other regions outside of North America, but admits that Europe has a multi-regional regulation system that is further complicated by the disjointed regulatory framework. The fact that testing activity is becoming more visible can even suggest that Tesla is approaching the final stages of passing the necessary validation procedures.
