Jaguar has announced the launch date for its first-ever all-electric SUV, the I-Pace, for India. The British brand will launch this exciting new vehicle on 9th March, via a virtual event. Pre-orders for the I-Pace had begun in November 2020.

The I-Pace comes in three different variants – the E, SE and HSE. It is Jaguar’s first launch of the year and their first electric offering in the country. Rohit Suri, President and Managing Director of Jaguar Land Rover India, announced the date for the virtual event yesterday. He said:

“After the fabulous response to the digital launch of the Land Rover Defender, we are excited about curating yet another digital experience for the launch of Jaguar I-Pace in India. This immersive & engaging digital event will provide a peek into a future-facing urban metropolis that is practically designed from the perspective of a sustainable ecosystem, uses innovative technologies and supports efficient modes of mobility like electric vehicles. I am certain that members of the media, our esteemed customers and fans of the brand will thoroughly enjoy the virtual experience being offered through this unique, futuristic, and eclectically designed launch event.”

While there is no official statement from the company, it is expected that the I-Pace will cost around ₹1 to 1.5 crore.

A Look at the Jaguar’s First-Ever Electric Vehicle

The Jaguar I-Pace is one of the most exciting vehicles that are set to be launched in India this year. The British brand has taken a bold step, stepping into electric mobility in the form of an SUV. The I-Pace, however, has impressed many, winning accolades across the globe.

Jaguar I-Pace

The I-Pace became the first-ever car to win an award in three different segments at the World Car Awards. It won the World Car of the Year, World Car Design of the Year and World Green Car of the Year in 2019. According to the company, the electric SUV has won around 80 awards globally till now.

A Glance at the Specs

The I-Pace has a powertrain consisting of two permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM), one on either axle. The all-wheel-drive transmission has a combined output of 394 bhp and 696 N-m of torque. This allows it to accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in just 4.8 seconds, which is quite good. The 90-kWh battery pack promises a range of around 480 km – again a decent figure. This battery pack is also capable of charging from 0 to 80% in 45 minutes using a 100 kW DC charger.

Jaguar also offers many performance features in the I-Pace, which makes it a very exciting car to drive. Torque vectoring by braking provides controlled independent braking on the individual inside front and rear wheels. This helps to add to the turning forces acting on the car. At higher speeds, the active air suspension automatically lowers the car by 10 mm. This improves aerodynamic efficiency, and consequently, the range. Adaptive dynamics analyze your throttle, brake and steering input constantly, and adjusts the dampers electronically to offer a better driving experience. Enhanced brake regeneration improves overall efficiency, while active vanes in the front grill provide an optimum balance between cooling and aerodynamics.

What’s on the Interior and Exterior?

The sloping bonnet and front grill allow for high aerodynamic efficiency, with a drag coefficient of 0.29. The sloping roofline makes for a crossover-like profile, and the sharp LED headlamps give it a distinctive look. There are two roof options available – body-colored or panoramic glass roof. Wheel options are either 18″ or 19″, depending on the user’s driving requirements.

Jaguar I-Pace Seats

Being a Jaguar, the I-Pace offers an immersive experience on the inside. Electric adjustable Luxtec sport seats, 380 watts Merdian sound System and an interactive driver display allow for a rich feel. The acoustic laminated glass offers noise isolation, which helps get a calm ride. Cabin-air ionisation comes with a PM2.5 filter, and you can pre-condition the cabin for a comfortable ride.

In-car technology consists of the Pivi Pro, which comes with an all-new navigation system and a smartphone pack. Smart settings identify the driver and select the preferred settings for mirror adjustment and media.

Why The I-Pace is a Major Step for Jaguar

Entering the electric market with an SUV was a bold move on Jaguar’s part. The segment is already filled with a number of competitors, and that’s not exactly the easiest market to break into. Tesla already has its Model 3 and Model Y in the segment, which are dirt-cheap compared with the competition. Mercedes has the EQC, while Audi is also launching the e-Tron this year. Despite that, Jaguar chose this segment to break into electric mobility, and the move paid off quite well.

While the I-Pace may not be a segment leader, it has won a lot of awards globally. And not just that, it has received appreciation for the boldness of its design. Yes, it is slightly on the expensive side, but there are a number of positives. For example, an acceleration timing of 4.8 seconds for an SUV is impressive. Not to mention the interior space, as well as storage space, which is definitely on the higher side.

In an industry dominated by Tesla, and also having a lot of rivalry from the German counterparts, the British brand has taken a bold step. And with a really good like I-Pace, the move might just pay off. Now, they are bringing this vehicle to India, where the SUV market has a lot of customers. Not to mention the fanatics for premium brands like Jaguar. And yes, the I-Pace definitely showcases everything that Jaguar stands for.
