EV Loyalty Hits New High as 96% of Owners Say Their Next Car Will Be Electric

Electric cars are no longer a novelty, but a new lifestyle. A new JD Power 2026 U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Ownership Study reveals an eye-opening trend, indicating that 96% of EV owners intend to remain electric in their next vehicle. Such a degree of loyalty is not very common in the automotive industry and represents a significant shift in the perception of mobility by the drivers.

Satisfaction with EV ownership has reached a peak. Premium EVs ranked 652 on the JD Power 1,000-point scale, and mass-market EVs were at 511, which is three digits higher than they were a year ago.

There are various reasons for this, such as increased battery range and efficiency, quicker and more efficient charging, reduced operating and maintenance costs, and improved vehicle software and performance.

EVs also performed considerably better than plug-in hybrids. Premium EVs are rated 114 points higher than PHEVs, with mass-market EVs taking the lead with 117 scores, mostly because the total cost of ownership is lower, and the driving experience is less strenuous.

Charging Infrastructure Finally Catching Up

Public charging, which is considered one of the greatest historical obstacles to EV adoption, has been improved the most dramatically. With the adoption of Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) among various brands today, non-Tesla drivers now have access to the extensive Tesla Supercharger network, which is considered the most credible fast-charging network in the U.S.

Simultaneously, networks like ChargePoint, Electrify America, and EVgo are steadily increasing their coverage and making uptime better. To most owners, range anxiety is becoming rare and is fading away at a very high rate.

Top-Ranked EVs by Owner Satisfaction

Power’s study also highlighted the models delivering the best ownership experience.

Premium Segment Leaders

Tesla Model 3 – 804 points
Tesla Model Y – 797 points
BMW i4 – 795 points

Tesla’s dominance shows its strengths in software, efficiency, charging integration, and over-the-air updates, while BMW’s i4 stands out for combining EV performance with traditional luxury refinement.

Mass-Market Segment Leaders

Ford Mustang Mach-E – 760 points
Hyundai IONIQ 6 – 748 points
Kia EV9 – 745 points

These vehicles show how mainstream brands are delivering compelling EVs with strong range, fast charging, and competitive pricing.

Interestingly, the level of loyalty is high even without government incentives. The federal tax credit of up to $7,500 has now lapsed, but it was able to assist early adopters, with 96% of owners indicating that they would still purchase an EV. That implies that the ownership experience is more important than subsidies as a driver of satisfaction.
