In a horrific accident, a Tesla Model Y was reported to have fallen nearly 800 meters (over 2,600 feet) down a steep hillside in China, with the car falling across rocky landscapes before finally landing on the ground. The car was totally mangled, its exterior was crushed down, the glass was broken, and the body parts were torn apart. But in a miracle, the driver is alive with minor injuries. Yet another example of Tesla saving lives.
The severity of the crash is evident from the fact that emergency crews that arrived on the scene had to break up the wreck to retrieve the vehicle. Although there was a devastating blow to the exterior of the car, the cabin space was not much affected, as there was still a survivable space to occupy by the person.

Cabin Integrity Proves Critical
Among the most notable details of the crash, the A- and B-pillars have survived, and they are the structural supports that create the safety cage in the middle of a vehicle. These pillars are important in high-energy impacts and rollovers to prevent roof collapse and preserve cabin geometry. According to photos and reports of the rescue, the Tesla Model Y did not deform and collapse its core safety cell with the destruction of the exterior. This enabled the driver to evade life-threatening crush injuries, as is the norm in serious fall-and-roll accidents.
Modern vehicles are designed with crumple zones that absorb energy by deforming, but survival ultimately depends on preserving the occupant compartment. In this case, the energy from the fall appears to have been dissipated through progressive structural failure around the cabin rather than within it.

Battery Pack: Low Center of Gravity, No Fire
Fortunately, there was no post-fire crash in the vehicle. Electric vehicle battery fires are not very common, but still a concern to the general population. The high-voltage battery pack in this incident was not destroyed by fire, even though the mechanical stress on it was severe.
The Tesla Model Y has its battery pack low in the chassis, which helps to lower the center of gravity. This shape not only enhances the handling and rollover resistance in normal driving but may also have an impact on the crash dynamics by stabilising the weight distribution of the vehicle as it rolls.
Although no car would be certified to survive the fall of 800 meters, the rigid casing of the battery enclosure and its isolation systems seem to have avoided thermal runaway in this instance.
The high-structural rigidity, huge casting parts, and a strengthened battery pack have been the hallmarks of Tesla’s safety philosophy. The vehicles of the company are always doing well in the crash tests that they have globally; however, real-world extreme accidents are the ones that ensure a different form of validation.
As in a fall of such a scale, there are several variables that determine survival, like the landscape, the amount of hits that occur on the way to the ground, the position of the vehicle, and the fact that the cabin was not damaged. The fact that the driver only received minor injuries indicates that the forces that were transmitted to the occupant space were greatly reduced.
It is also possible that it was also influenced by seatbelt usage and deployment of airbags, but this still has to be confirmed. The restraint systems of today are made to deal with the deceleration forces even during the complicated multi-impact events.
