Model Y, Tesla’s best-selling crossover, appears to be ready for a performance-oriented restyle. New sightings on the Nürburgring racetrack in Germany have revealed a barely disguised Model Y Performance prototype being put through its paces at high speed, and it appears to have a couple of important modifications, suggesting that a more performance-focused variant is on the way. As indicated by most of the recent leaks, such as the one at Palo Alto with 21-inch forged wheels.
Although an updated Model Y Performance has not been revealed officially by Tesla, the modifications that can be observed on this test car are very similar in line to those applied to the new Model 3 Performance. The two upgrades indicate that Tesla is improving its performance-oriented vehicles in a more driver-centric way – not a complete redesign, but with track-ready hardware.
Performance Enhancements Key
Forged 21-Inch Wheels
The best improved visual appearance is perhaps the introduction of new 21-inch forged wheels. Such wheels not only give a more aggressive look but also provide a performance improvement. Forged wheels tend to be more lightweight and stronger than cast ones as well, assisting in minimizing unsprung weight and enhancing handling, braking, and acceleration.
Pirelli P-Zero Tires
Adding to the new wheels are performance P-Zero tires. These tires are known to be of extreme grip and responsiveness and thus make a common choice on performance cars. The presence of their inclusion indicates that Tesla has been working on enhancing the ability to corner and general track behavior.

Rear Spoiler
Another prominent feature is a subtle rear spoiler that looks more like the one that is fitted on the Model 3 Performance. The relatively small size of the spoiler should help stabilize the vehicle aerodynamically at faster speeds, and the spoiler also adds an aggressive bend to the rear of the Model Y.
Red Brake Calipers
It also used red calipers on the brakes that were rather evident since it is a feature inclination of the performance models of Tesla. Although it is yet to be seen whether the braking system has also been improved, the calipers point to a possible improvement in the braking capabilities as well.
Front Sport Seats
At the cabin, Tesla seemingly included sport-style frontal seats like the ones in the revised Model 3 Performance. They are more laterally supportive, preventing the driver and passenger from sliding around during spirited driving or a track day. That is a real comfort and performance improvement for fans.
Outside Remains Much as Before
The front and rear bumper design that exists in the current Model Y Performance does not seem to have changed in spite of the performance-targeted modifications. This implies that Tesla is retaining a general exterior profile, presumably to maintain aerodynamic effectiveness and to make it easier to manufacture. Tesla could be opting to target the Model Y updates mostly to the mechanical and interior side, whilst the Model 3 has recently gone through a high-profile exterior update.
Competition in a Global Marketplace
Such shifts point to the fact that Tesla continues moving toward changing its lineup of vehicles to achieve better competition all over the globe, as more cars are offered by new manufacturers in China and Europe. With its tweaks to existing designs that incorporate specific performance improvements, Tesla is providing consumers more reasons to enjoy driving through an improved dynamic. At the same time, it is not compromising its simple and clean design aesthetic.
The parallels to the refreshed Model 3 Performance may also indicate a convergence on performance trim ideology: sportier cars, better capable on the track, and with sportier interiors, but without sacrificing range or usability as daily drivers. Tesla enthusiasts should be excited, as we have been hearing about an affordable Model Y on the horizon.
